Construction was interrupted twice, due to World War II and then due to lack of funds. Finally, in 2004, the exterior work was completed. The interior of the church is still being decorated.
Architecture:
The Church of Saint Sava is built in the Serbian-Byzantine style, with 12 bells and a dominating central dome. It was envisioned as the largest Orthodox church in the Balkans, and by the size of its dome, it ranks third in the world. The interior is richly decorated with mosaics and frescoes, the work of numerous Serbian artists.
