One of the world’s leading hospitality brands Hard Rock Cafe will soon open a venue in the heart of Belgrade, on the site known for famous Belgrade restaurant Ruski car.
At 29 Obilićev venac square for 122 years there stood a symbol of the capital, restaurant “Ruski car” named in honor of the Russian ruler Alexander II Nikolayevich Romanov. However in 2012 instead of this venue chain hospitality brand Vapiano established another Italian eatery. After a few seasons operating in downtown Vapiano finally moved out.
For more than 120 years of existence, Belgrade kafana Russian car was witness to many city events and it was visited by doctors, lawyers, politicians, local and forign celebrities.
Today’s building was built between 1922 and 1926. The building is under state protection since it was pronounced for cultural and architectural asset of the city. During the interwar period, Ruski car had a look of noble Belgrade café. However, after the Second World War was transformed into social property. The original interior was destroyed in the reconstruction in the early sixties of the 20th century when in this spot opened the first self-service restaurant called Zagreb. Until the nineties catering company Stari grad leased the space until when the new owner renovated the restaurant and returned his old name – Ruski car.
Hard Rock cafe chain currently owns nearly 200 branches in more than 60 countries worldwide. They are known for the authentic ambiance of a combination of pub and restaurant, where visitors can buy souvenirs and props with the famous logo, but also to listen to good music and live acts. In the former Yugoslavia the first Hard Rock cafe opened in Podgorica (Montenegro).
